Prof. Adrienne Russell

Research Fellow

Adrienne Russell studies communication technologies, digital-era publics, and pressing social problems. She is Mary Laird Wood Professor and co-director of the Center for Journalism, Media, and Democracy in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Her most recent book, The Mediated Climate (Columbia University Press 2023), explores the overlapping climate and information crises and examines the battle to influence the public being waged by journalists, activisits, corporate interests, and Big Tech.

Her research at the Wiezenbaum Institute will advance a project called “Earth Hacks: Making sustainability and digital innovation more compatible.” The project aims to provide a blueprint for tech innovators by exploring what it means to genuinely prioritize sustainability - environmental, social and economic - and by documenting alternative technologies already succeeding at that work.
