Digitalization and Networked Security

The research group studies networked security as an essential component of (digital) public services in order to detect cascading emergencies at an early stage, to keep people informed in an optimal and trustworthy way and to indicate options for action. It focuses in particular on the analysis of uncertainties and the handling of non-knowledge in the use of digital technologies in the context of warnings.

Area: Digital infrastructures and technologies of safety and security

The area uses a Design Science Research (DSR) approach and Value Sensitive Design (VSD) methods to analyse smart cities in terms of human-machine interaction, taking into account ethical issues and users' perceptions.

Area: Digital platforms in risk and crisis communication/management

Requirements and needs for the implementation and use of digital infrastructures and platforms in civil security, and risk and crisis communication with the population are the focus of this area. To better understand the interaction between users, socio-technical systems and the communicative characteristics of digital platforms, the focus is be on the reception, decision-making and usage routines of technology users and the resulting reality constructions and decisions as well as the handling of futures.

Area: Use and perception of warning systems

In order to protect life and limb and minimise damage, the communication of risks and hazards is a a key step for initiating protective action. This area conducts research into digital warning systems. The focus is on analysing the perception of the warning infrastructure by the population.
