Open Research

The Weizenbaum Institute stands for open, transparent research. We want to contribute to increasing the transparency, traceability, efficiency, reproducibility and quality of our research results. That is why we make the principles of open research (especially open access, open data, open source) the benchmark of our research practice.

In the following, we provide an overview of the various infrastructures, initiatives, and groups that promote, develop, and research the topic of open research at our institute.

Formats and infrastructures for Open Research

The Weizenbaum Institute provides infrastructures, guidelines, services and other resources for interdisciplinary digitalization research in order to publish, reuse and archive results, data, code and software over long periods of time at no cost and without barriers.

  • Our mission statement

The Weizenbaum Institute’s mission statement defines open research as one of five fundamental working principles: “The Weizenbaum Institute stands for open and transparent research. We rely on the approaches of open data, open source, open access and open science methods and develop them further.”

Open Research initiatives and projects

The researchers at the WI offer open research data and teaching-learning practices for reuse by science, society, and other sectors. They develop free, open, and reusable software tools based on open source principles for the acquisition of new insights and their reutilization by scientific, social and other interested stakeholder groups.

  • Weizenbaum Panel: Data

The Weizenbaum Panel collects longitudinal data on the question of how people perceive digitalization, how people's democratic and civic attitudes are changing and how they shape their role in a digitalizing democracy. To enable other researchers to work with the survey data, the data including the associated questionnaires as well as the methodological and results reports are published.

Researching Open Research

The principles and values of open research underpin all scientific projects at the Weizenbaum Institute. In addition, there are a number of research groups and units that explicitly focus on specific dimensions of open research and develop them further (such as research data infrastructures, research assessment or open teaching and learning practices).

  • Education in the Digital World

This research group focuses on the requirements for the design of digital teaching and learning processes and the possibilities and limits of increasing individualization of education. The use of new technologies, in particular AI, is analyzed from a theoretical and application-oriented perspective.
