Delphi-Study with Psychotherapists

This project looks at the effects of social media on well-being from a psychotherapeutic perspective.

Background

While research on social media’s effect on negative emotions such as envy and cognitive bias primarily focuses on self-reports from users and places importance on understanding how the time spent on devices or on applications affects users, in this project we intend to shift the perspective.

Objective

The objective we pursue in this project is to involve the perspective of psychotherapists as part of a two-wave Delphi study. Psychotherapists are on the frontline of diagnosing, advising, and treating people who seek help, potentially as a result of their social media exposure. This perspective is meant to allow for a more integrative view of the consequences of social media use as mental health issues accumulate and trickle down to clinical practice.

The primary goal of the study, therefore, will be to answer the question: What influence of social media on users’ well-being do practicing psychotherapists observe in their clinical practice?
