Andrew Clement: Smart City Politics

Prof. Andrew Clement is a member of Waterfront Toronto’s Digital Strategy Advisory Panel and will share and discuss insights on the concept of smart city during his talk.

The concept of a ‘smart city’ is a highly flexible and fraught one. Rather than discussing abstract notions we will take a closer look at one of the more prominent concrete examples: the Toronto Quayside area is currently in the early stages of planning by Sidewalk Labs – a subsidiary company of Google – for a “neighbourhood built from the internet up”. Therefore we can begin to assess their “vision of urban innovation” as well as the controversies it invites, by looking at an actual attempt at implementation. The talk will deal with the social and technical aspects of the project as well as the political issues, organisational struggles and democratic challenges tied to such an ambitious endeavor.
