Dr. Balázs Bodó: Mediating trust with technology on a planetary scale. What could possibly go wrong?

The ways we build trust and manage distrust are changing. We use digital technologies to produce trust and manage distrust on a planetary scale. The same technologies transcend our interpersonal relations and institutions and change the nature of trust which emerges there.

Because traditional, systemic guarantors of trust (such as governments, various experts and systems from media, via science to finance) are in crisis, or do not scale well, we increasingly rely on technology mediated trust to enable human cooperation. But can we, should we trust these trust mediating technologies? How can we make sure that we can have trust in our new, disruptive trust producing, and distrust mitigating technological systems from Uber to blockchains?

Balázs Bodó is an economist, senior socio-legal researcher at the Institute for Information Law, University of Amsterdam.
