Will Atwood-Charles
Person
Will Attwood-Charles is a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at Boston College and is trained as an economic and organizational sociologist. He is interested in the broad question of the reorganization of work in the 21st century and how workers experience these changes. So far, he has studied efforts to reorganize healthcare work, status dynamics in a peer-production community (commonly referred to as a “makerspace”), and most recently the experience of workers in the on-demand “gig” economy (e.g. Postmates and Favor).
While in Berlin, he conducted interviews with gig workers for a comparative case study between Germany and the U.S. This research is interested in the experience of workers as it pertains to particular features of the institutional environment (local labor market considerations, availability of social services, worker classifications, etc.). The goal is to better understand how digital labor platforms exert control over workers, and under what conditions.
