Dr. Rena Schwarting
About
Dr. Rena Schwarting holds a postdoctoral position in the WZB project “Assessing Big Data” (ABIDA) as part of the research area “Digitalization and Societal Transformation”. She works at the intersection of organization, technology, and society. Drawing on organizational sociology and social theory, her research investigates the structural embeddings of data technology in different organizational contexts, and its societal consequences.
Throughout her fellowship at the Weizenbaum Institute, she will conduct research on her current project about the relationship between big data applications, organizations and the discrimination against protected groups. In particular, her project analyzes how the formal functions and rules associated with the introduction of data technologies relate to informal discriminatory practices in different organizational contexts, such as online platforms or search engines.
