Dr. Daniel Thiele
About
Daniel Thiele leads the research group "Dynamics of Digital Mobilisation" at the Weizenbaum–Institute. His research focuses on political communication on social media, computational methods, and anti-democratic mobilisation. At the Weizenbaum–Institute, he investigates coordinated social media manipulation and digital communication by and about populist actors.
Daniel holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna (dissertation: "Populism from Below: A Computational Analysis of Populist Communication in User Comments on News Media Facebook Pages"), as well as a Master’s degree from the University of Vienna and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Mannheim. Previously, he was a doctoral researcher in the FWF-funded project "Political and Media Populism" (University of Vienna) and a visiting researcher at the University of Amsterdam and the Weizenbaum–Institute, supported by an OeAD Marietta Blau Scholarship.
Daniel is an active community builder and elected member of the Steering Committee of the ECPR Standing Group on Political Communication. He is dedicated to open science and actively developes open-source research software.
