Prof. Dr. Barton Beebe

About
Barton Beebe is the John M. Desmarais Professor of Intellectual Property Law at NYU School of Law and a Co-Director of the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy at NYU.
At the Weizenbaum Institute, Barton will study the history of past predictions of the future of law, specifically those conceived in response to rapid technological change. Since the late nineteenth century, jurists have repeatedly declared that some new technology will bring the “death of law.” Barton’s project seeks to make sense of these periodic episodes of legal extinction panic and euphoria with a view to enriching our understanding of law’s current response to the emergence of artificial intelligence.
Barton’s work has previously focused on the empirical, doctrinal, and cultural analysis of intellectual property and intellectual property law as well as on law and technology. In addition to his J.D., his Ph.D. is in literary studies.
