Statement for democracy, freedom, the rule of law and diversity

Democracy, freedom, the rule of law and diversity are the cornerstones of our social coexistence. Strengthening these values is one of the most important tasks for society as a whole and of fundamental importance for our work at the Weizenbaum Institute.

The Weizenbaum Institute therefore expressly supports the statement of the Presidium of the German Rectors' Conference "Science needs liberal democracy and the rule of law" of January 23, 2024. We take a clear stance against racism, anti-Semitism, intolerance and any form of discrimination. We oppose anti-democratic endeavors and hostility towards science.

Through its interdisciplinary, independent and value-based research, the Weizenbaum Institute promotes a self-determined, sustainable and responsible approach to digital technology. In the spirit of Joseph Weizenbaum, it aims to enrich the public debate on the social consequences of digitalization. In this way, the Weizenbaum Institute contributes to the pluralistic scientific and social debate and to the strengthening of liberal democracy.

We are convinced that a diversity of perspectives is also a basic prerequisite for the success of our scientific work. This is why we expressly support and promote cooperation with academics worldwide and the global networking of the Institute. We also strive for an open and pluralistic exchange with social groups in order to strengthen liberal democracy.

The commitment to democracy, freedom, pluralism and respectful interaction with one another is therefore of fundamental importance for our work at the Weizenbaum Institute.
