Exploring AI Manipulation, Generative Disinformation, and Algorithmic Bias in the Global South

Rana Arafat explores the intersection of news automation, AI manipulation, and algorithmic bias in the Global South, with a focus on insights drawn from Arab newsrooms and Indian elections. As AI-driven technologies reshape news production and dissemination, unique challenges arise in contexts with limited resources, regulatory frameworks, and distinct socio-political landscapes.

In this guest talk, Rana Arafat will discuss how automated news systems, manipulated AI content, and biased algorithms impact the representation and perception of news in these regions. Drawing on case studies from Arab newsrooms, Gaza War, and the 2024 Indian elections, Rana Arafat will highlight the impacts of generative disinformation and algorithm-based fabrication on public perception and democratic processes exploring strategies to mitigate these challenges in diverse sociopolitical contexts.
