Data Access for Research – The Digital Service Act (DSA)
This workshop on DSA will be held at the Weizenbaum Institute together with the European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) and is sponsored by Stiftung Mercator.
The Digital Services Act (DSA), and in particular Article 40, offer diverse possibilities for researchers to access platform data for scientific purposes. Although the DSA will only come into effect in February 2024, and some initial milestones have already been achieved in implementing the legislation (e.g., the designation of very large online platforms and search engines by the EU Commission in April 2023), many further steps still need to be taken. Important open questions include who can submit data access requests, what data researchers are entitled to access, and how the verification of access rights can be managed by authorities and platforms.
The workshop brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers who have worked with platform data or intend to work with it in the future to develop recommendations for the implementation of the DSA. The explicit goal is to be an open forum for all disciplines working with platform data, as only an inclusive group of scientists can develop guidelines and recommendations that work for science as a whole.
