Accessibility Statement

On this page you will find our accessibility statement. Note: The statement in easy-to-read language is further down on this page.

This accessibility statement applies to the website of the Weizenbaum Institute, available at: www.weizenbaum-institut.de.

The Weizenbaum Institute strives to make its website accessible in accordance with the applicable legal requirements and thus to comply with the provisions of the German Federal Act on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (BGG) and the Ordinance on Barrier-Free Information Technology (BITV 2.0), implementing Directive (EU) 2016/2102.

Status of Compatibility with Accessibility Requirements

This website is partially compliant with the requirements of the BITV 2.0 and Directive (EU) 2016/2102. Some content does not yet fully meet accessibility standards.

Non-Accessible Content

The content listed below is not yet accessible for the following reasons:

  • Compatibility with screen readers is not yet fully ensured. We are working to improve both the content and navigation for screen reader users.

  • Some embedded videos do not have captions or audio descriptions.

  • PDF documents are not structured in an accessible way. We aim to provide accessible PDF files in the future, but this process is still ongoing.

  • Some graphical elements (e.g., illustrations) lack complete alternative text.

  • Certain navigation elements (e.g., dropdown menus) have limited keyboard accessibility.

  • Translations into Easy Language and German Sign Language are not yet available.

  • Some linked or embedded third-party platforms and content (e.g., map modules) are not accessible.

We are continuously working to identify and remove these barriers.

Preparation of this Accessibility Statement

This statement was prepared on October 20, 2025. The assessment was carried out through a combination of self-evaluation based on BITV self-assessment tests and sample checks on the website, as well as an external review. The external service provider conducted a quick test covering a limited number of BITV 2.0 test steps, based on WCAG 2.1 and selected success criteria of WCAG 2.2.

Accessibility Statement in Easy Language

Which website does this apply to?

This statement applies to the website of the Weizenbaum Institute: www.weizenbaum-institut.de

The Weizenbaum Institute wants everyone to be able to use its website easily — including people with disabilities. Therefore, the website aims to comply with the Federal Act on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (BGG) and the Ordinance on Barrier-Free Information Technology (BITV 2.0). These laws implement a European regulation (EU Directive 2016/2102).

How Accessible Is the Website?

The website is partly accessible. That means many things work well, but some barriers still exist.

Currently not accessible:

  • Some screen readers cannot yet read all content correctly.

  • Some videos do not have subtitles or audio descriptions.

  • Many PDF files are not accessible. The Institute is working to make future PDF files accessible.

  • Some images do not have alternative text.

  • Some menus cannot be used entirely with a keyboard.

  • Texts in Easy Language and German Sign Language are still missing.

  • Some linked or embedded content (e.g., maps or external platforms) are not accessible.

The Weizenbaum Institute is constantly working to identify and improve these barriers.

Who Checked Accessibility?

This statement was created on October 20, 2025. The accessibility review was conducted partly by the Weizenbaum Institute itself and partly by an external specialist organization. Individual aspects were tested according to the rules of BITV 2.0, WCAG 2.1, and WCAG 2.2.
