The Weizenbaum Institute, founded in 2017, researches the effects of advancing digitalization on our society. With its recommendations for action, it contributes to ensuring that the digital transformation is sustainable, self-determined and responsible. The Weizenbaum Institute is supported by a network of seven partners, including the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin, the Berlin University of the Arts, the University of Potsdam, the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) and the Berlin Science Center for Social Research (WZB). The institute is financed by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and the state of Berlin. It is located in Berlin.

For our research group “Digitalization and Opening up Science” at the Weizenbaum-Institut e.V. we are looking at the earliest possible date for a student Assistant (m/f/d) in Computer Science or related field with 48,72 percent of regular working hours (19 hours per week). The position is initially limited until 15th October 2027. An extension of the contract after this date is aimed for.

Work Content

The interdisciplinary research group “Digitalization and Opening up Science” (https://www.weizenbaum-institut.de/en/research/organizing-knowledge/digitalization-and-opening-up-science/) is concerned with the scientific practices surrounding the development, evaluation and use of artificial intelligence (AI), in short "AI as a science” and “science with AI". It analyzes and evaluates the epistemic and ethical aspects of AI research and develops standards and approaches to improve its practices, in particular data practices and infrastructures. 

Your Tasks

  • Supporting the research group in planning and carrying out research projects, e.g., in the form of programming activities, training or evaluation of AI models, literature research, preparation and implementation of data collection and annotation.
  • Assisting the research group in preparing teaching materials and conducting courses
  • Assisting the research group in organizing events and activities at/for the Weizenbaum Institute

Your Profile

  • Active bachelor's or master's studies in artificial intelligence/machine learning, data science, computer science, or a related field
  • Good to very good academic performance
  • Very good programming skills (especially Python and AI/ML-related frameworks)
  • Excellent English skills and very good communication skills, in general
  • Interest in interdisciplinary, critical examination of AI systems or the research and development processes surrounding AI
  • Enjoys working in a team
  • Motivated, independent, and structured approach to work
