Report: Workshop on Critical Theory of the Computational

30.10.2025

In this report, we look back on the Workshop on Critical Theory of the Computational, which took place on 16-17 October 2025 at the Weizenbaum Institute.

The two-day workshop on Critical Theory of the Computational brought together 40 international experts to engaged in critical theories (both in the tradition of the Frankfurt School and beyond) to examine the effects of computational and digital constellations. In six panel rounds the experts discussed how foundational dynamics in society are influenced by newer technological developments which are embedded in ongoing planetary transformations and introduce new actors like AI systems and human–machine hybrids. They also shape existing understandings of agency, autonomy and emancipation. A special highlight was the keynote by Prof. Kate Crawford on “Model Collapse“ on the evening of the first day. The event was co-organized by the Center for Critical Computational Studies (C3S) in Frankfurt, Center for Responsible AI Technologies in Munich and the Weizenbaum Institute (WI) in Berlin.
