Prof. Dr. Sandra Wachter (MSc Oxon) is a Humboldt Professor at the Hasso Plattner Institute and a professor of technology and regulation at the University of Oxford’s Oxford Internet Institute. Prof. Wachter’s Technology and Regulation research group focuses on the governance of new technologies and examines the legal, ethical, and technical aspects of AI and inferential analytics, explainable AI, algorithmic fairness, platform regulation, profiling, and emotion and facial recognition software. The societal impacts of generative AI and hallucinations in areas such as the workplace, misinformation, a free press, and human rights are also central to the group’s research agenda.
Prof. Wachter also advises governments, companies, and NGOs worldwide on regulatory and ethical issues related to new technologies. She publishes in leading journals such as Science and Nature and has received numerous prestigious awards. Numerous media profiles of Wachter have been published, including in the Financial Times, Wired, Nature, TechCrunch, Der Spiegel, and Business Insider. Her work is also regularly cited in media outlets such as The New York Times, the Financial Times, and Time Magazine. Previously, Prof. Wachter was a visiting professor at Harvard Law School.
