Prof. Dr. Theo Araujo

Research Fellow

About

Theo Araujo will work with the Research Group “Digital News Dynamics“ to understand patterns of news consumption via generative AI. This includes using data donation to map individual interactions with generative AI conversational agents (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Gemini) to detect patterns of news-related information provision and consumption.

As Professor in Media, Organizations and Society, he investigates the dynamic interplay between media and organisations within society, with a special focus on trust and on the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence in communication. Methodologically, his research includes the development of citizen science methods within communication research (via data donation), as well as computational methods.

Araujo is Director of the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) and principal investigator of the Digital Data Donation Infrastructure, coordinating a consortium of six universities. He co-directs the UvA Research Priority Areas Trust in the Digital Society and AI & Politics. Araujo was recently awarded the Vidi Grant by the Dutch National Science Foundation to investigate the Contents, Consequences, and Counterstrategies for Trust Calibration on Generative AI Conversational Agents.
