Franziska Sofia Hafner

About

Sofia is a research assistant at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, specializing in algorithmic fairness. With a background in Computer Science and Public Policy, she conducts critical audits of emerging technologies. Her research focuses on systems where algorithmic fairness lacks a well-defined standard, such as dating app recommendation algorithms and the construction of gender in language models.

Sofia graduated with an MSc in Social Data Science from the Oxford Internet Institute. Prior to joining the Oxford Internet Institute, she earned a degree in Computer Science and Public Policy from the University of Glasgow, and studied abroad at the American University in Washington, D.C.

Sofia’s work on algorithmic fairness has been published in AI & Society and Social Network Analysis and Mining. She also presented her research on the construction of gender in language models at the 2024 NeurIPS conference.
