Prof. Nicolas Berente

Über

Nicholas Berente is Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College. At the Weitzenbaum Institute his research project was in the domain of: "A Process View of Artificial Intelligence Guardrails." 

Professor Berente conducts research into digital innovations such as artificial intelligence and their organizational, institutional and ethical implications. He received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, conducted his postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan, and was formerly faculty with the University of Georgia. For the research project, he and the Weitzenbaum team collaborated at the intersection of computer science and organizational processes to build on our separate work in these domains to generate a process view of guardrails to better ensure ethical development and appropriation of artificial intelligence technologies.

Professor Berente is the Faculty Director of Notre Dame's Industry Labs, and affiliated faculty at the Lucy Center for Data and Society and the ND-IBM Tech Ethics Lab. He is an experienced entrepreneur, having founded two technology startups, and the principal investigator for a number of U.S. National Science Foundation projects. Professor Berente has authored more than one hundred and fifty peer-reviewed scholarly articles. His work has been published in top journals, including Nature, Organization Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, and Research Policy, and he has won multiple awards for his research and teaching. He is Senior Editor at MIS Quarterly and at Information and Organization.
