Transferable Skills Course: Networking in Academia

We are offering a new workshop on Networking in Academia held by Amanda Wichert.

Course Goals and Contents

Networking can be challenging for researchers, especially in an increasingly international and mobile job market. Building and maintaining a strong network can foster professional relationships, support resilience, help navigate academic pressures, and contribute to career success, particularly for those entering academia without an established academic network.

In this workshop, participants will establish networking goals, explore ways to connect with others and practice effective networking strategies, discover networking options and platforms relevant in academia and beyond, and learn how to apply networking skills to build resilience and widen career options. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in moderated networking activities and will learn creative methods for cultivating professional relationships.

Participants: early career reseachers (i.e. PhDs and early Postdocs), max. 15 places
Workshop language: English

Key learnings

  • Why is networking valuable in academia, and what are its benefits for early career researchers?
  • How can we start conversations, build meaningful connections, and engage with others—even if typical networking events feel challenging?
  • How can we build sustainable networks that support our work and well-being beyond this event?
  • How can we approach online networking effectively, and which platforms are most useful?
  • How can we align networking and self-marketing with our personal goals and values, and overcome negative associations with networking?
  • How can strong peer networks support mental health and well-being in academia?

Methods

The workshop will combine interactive input, group and peer activities, and individual reflection. Participants will receive a digital resource site with handouts, slides, and additional resources and links.
