AI for Bad: Far-right campaigning through AI-generated visual content

The project explores the significance of AI-generated images in the political communication of far-right and other anti-democratic actors.

Background

In light of recent urgent and highly political developments, the project aims to explore the relevance of AI-generated images in the political communication of far-right and other anti-democratic groups. It seeks to understand what AI content is used for mobilization and what aesthetics are adopted. Regarding these visual mobilization efforts, the project examines the legal frameworks governing the use of AI in this context, the types of harm these laws address, the necessary measures for content moderation and platform governance, and the transparency rules that should be implemented for AI use in political campaigns.

Objective

Thus, the project integrates pressing questions about strategic political communication, the impact of AI, and legal and regulatory issues. It also addresses the concerns of civil society organizations working to combat online hate and disinformation.
