Stefan Baack is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam and an associate researcher in the "Digitalization and Opening up Science" research group. At the Weizenbaum Institute, his work focuses on the critical study of generative AI evaluation. He also conducts research on AI training data, open source AI, and emerging web standards around generative AI.

He previously earned his PhD on data journalism and civic tech at the University of Groningen's Centre for Media and Journalism Studies. He then worked as a researcher at the Mozilla Foundation, where he contributed to publications such as the Internet Health Report, supported the work of the policy team as well as the campaigns team, and pursued his own research on data governance and AI training data.

His work has received several awards (including "Best Article of the Year" 2018 in the journal Digital Journalism) and has been cited by outlets such as Wired.
