Ella Hafermalz

About

Dr. Ella Hafermalz is an Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a researcher at the Weizenbaum Institute. Her research explores the organizational and societal implications of generative AI, with a particular focus on AI-generated and synthetic data, digital work, creativity, and accountability.

At the Weizenbaum Institute, she works on science communication, in particular on how to talk about AI with children and support public understanding of emerging AI technologies.  Her academic background is in business information systems, organizational studies, and digital technologies. She received her PhD from the University of Sydney and previously worked there as a postdoctoral researcher before joining Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research combines qualitative and interpretive approaches to examine the ethical, organizational, and practical challenges associated with AI adoption, algorithmic accountability, and data-driven forms of organizing. 

Ella's work has been published in leading journals including Business Horizons and Organization Studies. She regularly delivers keynote presentations on AI and work, contributes to public debates on the societal impacts of generative AI, and has appeared in international media, including the BBC and The Guardian
