Prof. Dr. Uta Brandes

Uta Brandes is author and design consultant.

After studying English language and literature, political sciences, sociology and psychology at the University of Bremen and Leibniz University of Hannover, as well as earning her doctorate in sociology at the Leibniz University, she worked as a research assistant at the Psychology Department of the Hannover University, was deputy director of the Institute for Women and Society in Hannover, undersecretary for women's affairs at the Hessian State Chancellery in Wiesbaden, and director of the events department of the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.

From 1995-2015 she was Professor of Gender and Design at the Köln International School of Design / TH Köln, where she held the first ever professorship in design that officially had been designated to „gender and design“. She has been guest lecturer at universities in Germany, Japan, USA, Hong Kong, China, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Egypt.

She is the initiator and chair of the "international Gender Design Network" founded in New York in 2013, and a founding member and former chair of the "German Society for Design Theory and Research".
