Benedikt Schmal is a Senior Researcher at Ilmenau University of Technology and currently a Fellow at the Weizenbaum Institute. During his fellowship, he explores the role of academic publications in the digital age, aiming to develop innovative approaches to transform academic publishing into a dynamic, dialogue-driven process.

With a background in microeconometrics and modern causal inference methods, Benedikt Schmal has extensive experience in interdisciplinary research, particularly at the intersection of science, competition, and governance. His work has been published in renowned journals such as Research Policy and Economic Inquiry.

In addition to his research, he serves on the scientific advisory board of Econstor and regularly contributes economic policy commentary. He is committed to fostering a sustainable transformation of academic institutions in the context of digital transformation.
