Prof. Dr. Tongyu Wu
Person
The research project, which planned to accomplish at the Weizenbaum-Institut, delves into the relationship between labor, artificial intelligence (AI), and society, focusing on China’s AI data production ecosystem essential for AI advancements like ChatGPT. Conducted between 2019 and 2023, the research involved ethnographic fieldwork at seven data factories and major tech firms such as Alibaba, TikTok, and Tencent, supported by 178 semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in China's AI industry.
During the fellowship, Tongyu Wu plans to refine the paper that investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the transformation of annotation skills. As a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology at Zhejiang University with a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor’s in Anthropology from Sun Yat-sen University, her research explores the interplay between labor, technology, and society.
