At WI Nils Zurawski wants to look at the role of police regarding civil protection, the predominant ideas and imgaginaries that are brought forward regarding technologies, particularly concerning communication between authorities and citizens. What are the socio-technical constellations, how are information organised and are there any anticipatory option for social futures inherent (and with what limits)?
He is working on subjects such as surveillance, security and policing for about 25 years. Foremost he is interested in issues like knowledge, interaction between different actors and their socially informed imaginations of world and society. He studied sociology and anthropology and worked in criminology for many years. Hie work is situated on the intersection of those disciplines. Further aspects of his work covers conflict- and peace research, mediation, urban issues, consumption and doping.
He also runs the blog surveillance-studies.org and has in 2011 initiated the Surveillance Studies prize for journalism. He is involved nationally and internationally in various networks on the aspects of his research. In addition to this he works as a conflict coach and mediator and teaches on many of the subjects at the University of Hamburg.
