Dr. Katjana Gattermann
About
Katjana Gattermann is Associate Professor in Political Communication and Journalism at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) and co-leader of the research theme "Politics and Publics" at the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES) at the University of Amsterdam.
Katjana Gattermann’s work addresses questions that concern the relationship between representatives and represented in changing societies and the linking role of the media. Her research is comparative with a regional focus on Europe and as appeared in journals such as Electoral Studies, European Union Politics, the International Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism, and The Information Society. Her recent book is The Personalization of Politics in the European Union (Oxford University Press, 2022).
Her current research interests are driven by the extent to which, how, and with what effect media-politics-relationships are changing against the backdrop of democratic backsliding in Europe. During her Fellowship at the Weizenbaum Institute, she would like to study digital news dynamics in the aftermath of democratic elections in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. She is particularly interested in the interpretation of election results on news platforms: what are the dynamics underlying declarations of election winners and losers and which frames dominate? And, what are the consequences for election news reporting in traditional media and the societal discourse more generally?
Katjana Gattermann co-founded the ECPR Standing Group on Political Communication in 2017, and is currently Associate Editor at PRX (Political Research Exchange). She is also a core member of the international task force for the 2024 EES (European Election Study), national coordinator for the Dutch team of CamforS (Campaigning for Strasbourg), and member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Political Research.
